Binging Suspenseful Thriller Series: Our Sunday Evening Ritual

Updated: Oct 2, 2024

One of our favorite activities on a Sunday evening is binging suspenseful thriller series. We grab a bag of chips, cups of tea, and snuggle up on the couch. It’s the perfect way to wind down and end the weekend. Over the past few years, we’ve found ourselves hooked on some incredible shows, with a particular fondness for British series. There’s something about the sharp acting, clever scripts, and intricate plotlines that make them irresistible.

Here’s a look at our favorite series from recent years that have kept us on the edge of our seats. Interestingly, three out of the four are British, while one is an intense American production that grabbed our attention.

1. The Night Manager

Based on John le Carré’s novel, The Night Manager is a gripping tale of espionage, betrayal, and undercover operations. The series follows Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston), a former British soldier turned luxury hotel night manager, who is recruited by an intelligence officer to infiltrate the inner circle of Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie), an international arms dealer. The tension builds as Pine goes deeper into Roper’s dangerous world, blurring the lines between loyalty and survival. Hiddleston and Laurie’s electrifying performances make this series a must-watch for any fan of the thriller genre.

2. Slow Horses

Slow Horses, based on Mick Herron’s novel, brings a refreshing spin to the spy thriller genre. It centers around Slough House, a dumping ground for MI5 agents who have messed up in their careers. Under the bitter leadership of Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), these agents, called the “slow horses,” often find themselves in the middle of dangerous missions despite their low status. What makes this show stand out is the dark humor that underpins the action-packed narrative. The characters are deeply flawed, but their resilience and wit make them incredibly compelling to watch.

3. The Old Man

The Old Man features Jeff Bridges as Dan Chase, a former CIA operative who has been living off the grid for decades. His peaceful life is shattered when an assassin is sent to eliminate him, forcing Chase to go on the run. The series is a gripping blend of action and character study, exploring themes of aging, loyalty, and the cost of living a life filled with secrets. Bridges’ portrayal of a man grappling with his past while fighting for his future adds a layer of emotional depth to the intense plot, making The Old Man a standout thriller.

4. Bodyguard

This British political thriller was an instant hit, and for good reason. Bodyguard follows David Budd (Richard Madden), a war veteran turned police sergeant who is assigned to protect the controversial Home Secretary, Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes). As Budd grapples with his own psychological trauma, he finds himself in a high-stakes political conspiracy that threatens his life and his sense of duty. The fast-paced action, unpredictable plot twists, and Madden’s standout performance make Bodyguard a rollercoaster of suspense from start to finish.

While we’ve enjoyed many series, there’s something about British thrillers that captivates us. The balance of intense storytelling, stellar acting, and intricate characters keeps us coming back for more. Of course, The Old Man is a testament that American productions can also deliver thrilling, emotionally-charged narratives.

If you’re looking for your next binge-worthy series, these four should definitely be on your list.
